HAVANESE

 

 

Toy Breed, ideally suited for indoor, companion dog and is well suited as a watchdog.

 

 

Characteristics:  Havanese are cheerful, very affectionate, playful, gentle dogs which are highly intelligent, sociable, and sensitive.   They bond closely with their human families and have a natural affinity for children. He stands 8 - 11 inches (20-28 cm) high and is nearly square in build.  Weights 7 - 12 pounds (3-51/2 kg).  The legs are strong and allow for free and easy movement.  The profuse coat varies from wavy to curly.  The Havanese comes in a wide range of colors, including cream, gold, silver, blue, black, and other colors. The breed is of sold physical type and sound constitution.

History:  The Havanese is a member of the Bichon family.  His coat, construction, and lively manner all point to the little white dogs that were so popular with the Spanish centuries ago.  The Havanese could be descended from either Bolognese dogs crossed with small poodles, or Spanish owned Maltese.  The dogs found their way with the Spanish setters of Cuba, where the breed attained a certain distinctiveness from the other Bichons.
